FLORENCE PHOTOSHOOT GUIDE: Choosing Between the City Streets and Scenic Views

Here’s something many people don’t realize until they arrive: Florence may be small, but it’s made of two very different worlds when it comes to photos – and they’re separated by a river.

On one side: the postcard scenes of churches, bridges, narrow alleys, and historic piazzas. On the other: hills with gardens, panoramic viewpoints, and quiet corners you’d never expect inside a city. Both are Florence, both are beautiful – but they give completely different vibes in your photos.

Depending on the session length you book, we can cover just one or both. A 1.5-hour session usually means we focus on either the city center or the hills. A 2.5-hour session allows time to do both with no rush. Here’s how to choose which part of Florence fits your vision best.

The Historic City Center: CHUrches, Bridges, and Renaissance Streets

If you’re dreaming of Florence’s famous scenes – the Duomo rising above rooftops, the Ponte Vecchio reflected in the Arno, or narrow streets with warm golden walls with green shutters – you’re thinking of the city center.
This area has the most architectural variety, texture, and atmosphere. It’s walkable and full of options: charming backdrops, grand piazzas, wooden doors, and centuries-old corners. And while yes, it’s a popular area, I know exactly how to work around the crowds and find those quiet spots that feel like your own private Florence – the kind you’d never notice on your own, even after a week of wandering.

Best if you want:

  • iconic landmarks in the background: the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and many more
  • a short, easy shoot close to your hotel
  • more formal outfits (long dresses, suits, etc.)
  • variety of textures in one session

Good to know:

  • No driving or parking needed if you’re staying centrally
  • Everything is in an easy walking distance
  • Great year-round, even in winter

Bonus Tip: Make Your Shoot Tastier

If you love the idea of photos with a gelato, a glass of prosecco, or even an Aperol Spritz at a cozy bar or a rooftop terrace, just say the word! I know some great local spots where we can sneak in those authentic, lively moments during your session.

The AReA OF PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO: Viewpoints, Gardens & Hidden SPOTS

Cross the river with me to the Oltrarno side and you’ll see a different Florence. It’s quieter here, more spacious, and full of corners most visitors never find. This is where I bring clients who want something beyond the postcards – hidden staircases, ivy-covered walls, terraces, gardens, and that famous Piazzale Michelangelo view.
We won’t just stop at the main viewpoint. I know the paths behind it, the spots where the light hits just right, the places where we can see the best view to the Duomo without the crowds. If you want photos with greenery, open space, and that “just above the city” feeling, this is where it happens.

  • wide open views over Florence
  • nature or gardens in your gallery
  • a peaceful atmosphere with fewer tourists
  • a casual or romantic mood (perfect for proposals)

Good to know:

  • Uphill walk or short taxi ride from the center
  • Only few cafés or bathrooms nearby
  • Not stroller-friendly or high-heel-friendly (bring a second pair!)

Bonus Tip: ELEVATE YOUR LOOK

The hillside offers bright light, breeze, and movement, perfect conditions for fashion style sessions. If you’re up for it, bring a wide-brim hat, a flowing scarf, bold sunglasses, or even a long dress that plays in the wind.

How to Choose the Right Session for You

1.5-hour sessions

The 1.5-hour session focuses on one area, so your choice depends on the vibe you want in your photos. If you love historic architecture, narrow streets and famous landmarks pick the city center. It’s perfect for elegant, timeless shots with plenty of photo variety within walking distance.
If you prefer wide-open views, natural light, and quieter spots away from crowds, the hilltop area around Piazzale Michelangelo offers stunning panoramas, gardens, and hidden paths. It’s ideal for relaxed, nature-inspired photos with breathtaking backdrops.

2.5-hour sessions

The 2.5-hour session includes both areas. We start in the city center to capture detailed architecture and iconic landmarks, then take a short taxi ride up to Piazzale Michelangelo to shoot during golden hour or sunset with incredible skyline views. This package gives you a complete Florence story.

How to Get Around FLORENCE

If you’re already staying in Florence, you can walk to most meeting points easily. But keep in mind:
– The walk to Piazzale Michelangelo is uphill (about 25 minutes), but scenic and doable if you’re feeling fit.
Taxi is the easiest way to go uphill and saves your energy for smiling. The fare is around €15.
Buses can also take you to Piazzale Michelangelo but timetables are not reliable.
Driving is possible but trickier: small roads, limited parking, and ZTL (traffic-restricted) zones can be confusing. I don’t recommend it unless you know the area well.
For the longer session, I’ll help coordinate the timing and transportation so the flow stays relaxed.

When to Schedule Your Photoshoot

Timing & Light

Golden hour – the hour before sunset – is my favorite period of the day. If your schedule allows I highly recommend to do your session the late afternoon or in the evening, especially in summer when the midday light is very harsh. In the city, golden hour it hits the rooftops, bounces off buildings and bridges, and creates that warm glow. Around Piazzale Michelangelo it’s soft, golden light over the hills. My calendar is set to finish at sunset times so if you wish to do your session in the best light just book the last available slot if it is still available – or reach out for my recommendations.

Here’s a general guide for sunset times:
December – January: 4:30–5:00 pm
– February – March: 5:30–6:30 pm
– April: 7:30–8:00 pm
– May: 8:15–8:30 pm
– June – July: 8:30–9:00 pm
– August: 8:00–8:30 pm
– September: 7:00–7:30 pm
– October: 6:00–6:30 pm
– November: 4:45–5:15 pm

Outfits: What Looks Good Where

Thinking of dressing up? The historic downtown of Florence is the perfect backdrop for elegant looks – whether it’s a flying dress, a tailored suit or those heels you’ve been waiting to wear. If you’re imagining something a bit more relaxed – like summer dresses, soft linens, or a vintage-inspired look – the hilltop area around Piazzale Michelangelo with its gardens and scenic views, offers a more natural atmosphere. For more inspiration and coordinated outfit ideas, check out my detailed color and outfit guide.

A Final Word

Ultimately, it’s not about choosing downtown or the hilltop – it’s about what you want most. If you’re drawn to the city streets, landmarks and vibrant energy, downtown Florence is your stage. If breathtaking panoramic views, secret gardens and green scenery speak to you, then Piazzale Michelangelo and its hidden paths are better for you. Can’t decide? The 2.5-hour package lets you have the best of both worlds, explore the city’s heart and the hilltop’s magic in one session. Florence has something for everyone and wherever we go, we’ll make it unforgettable.
